******************************************************************************* Babylon 5: Season 1-5 ******************************************************************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- General Information ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Type.................: TV Series Video Format.........: H264 (CRF:20) Codec URL............: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/ Resolution...........: 720 x 480 FPS..................: Variable Source...............: DVD 16x9 Original Format......: NTSC Genre................: Science Fiction IMDb Rating..........: 8.2 Show Information.....: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babylon_5 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Release Notes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a heavily post-processed DVD rip of Babylon 5, for the purpose of maximizing image quality and viewing pleasure. Babylon 5 is a very tricky show to encode due to it being both a hybrid source (mix of NTSC and FILM scenes in each episode), and because there were some serious mistakes done during the show's production with regard to the CGI composition. As such no tool has to date been able to create a satisfactory transcode of this show. This encode tackles each of the problems indicated as follows: 1. Produce a hybrid (variable frame rate) video that alternates between 24 and 30 FPS, depending on whether the scene is a FILM or (CGI) VIDEO sequence. 2. Decimate the 1 in 5 duplicates that result from inverse telecine of FILM scenes, but skip decimation of VIDEO scenes (to allow smooth playback of video and film sequences alike). 3. Combat the aliased and incorrectly mastered CGI graphics by leveraging advanced video analysis and correction techniques (QTGMC-like enhancement). 4. Reduce the enormous amount of grain that is at times overwhelming and quite distracting, in scenes not well lit. There are a lot of them in this show. The video encoding was painstakingly prepared over several weeks, with AVI Synth pre-processing applied before the actual x264 encode. The audio is the original, ripped unchanged from the DVD without any transcoding or alteration. Note: Not all media players are able to handle variable frame rate (VFR) clips, so check out the quality and whether or not your player can handle these to your satisfaction, by prioritizing the sample.mkv file in the torrent. Players known to handle VFR clips very well include VLC and Media Player Home Cinema. MPlayer have had some issues in the past. There may be other candidates, but I haven't tested them.
General video quality of FILM scenes that are sufficiently lit (looks OK even on the DVD). From episode 5x01 @ 07:55.

Example of CGI quality, which if you compare to the DVDs is a significantly better in this encode, since they look awful on the DVD due to the show's botched mastering process. (From episode 3x03 @ 00:12)
